Principal's Corner

Dear Natomas Middle School Families,

Welcome to the 2026–2027 school year! My name is Patrick Birdsong, and I am honored to continue serving as the principal of Natomas Middle School. Our staff is excited to welcome students and families back for another year focused on academic achievement, student connectedness, safety, and building a strong school community.

At Natomas Middle School, we remain committed to the vision of preparing all students to become college and career ready, productive, responsible, and engaged citizens. As a 7th and 8th grade campus, we are able to focus intentionally on supporting middle school students during this important stage of their academic, social, and emotional development. Our goal is to create a school environment where students feel safe, supported, challenged, and connected every day.

During the 2026–2027 school year, we will continue strengthening systems and supports focused on student learning, engagement, attendance, and social-emotional wellness. Our staff remains dedicated to providing rigorous, standards-based instruction while also creating opportunities for collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and student voice. We will continue to build meaningful relationships with students and families while implementing systems that support both academic growth and positive school culture.

A major focus for Natomas Middle School this year will be increasing student connectedness and creating engaging classroom environments where students feel valued and empowered. We will continue refining our instructional practices, intervention systems, and collaborative structures to ensure all students receive the support they need to be successful. In addition, we will continue expanding opportunities for students through electives, extracurricular activities, leadership opportunities, and school-wide events that help students feel connected to our campus community.

I bring more than 28 years of educational experience serving K–8 students in Sacramento and the Bay Area. Prior to joining Natomas Middle School, I served as principal at Witter Ranch Elementary, Pioneer Elementary, Michael J. Castori Elementary, and Golden Valley Charter School. I earned my degree in Social Science from California State University, Sacramento, received my teaching credential in Urban Education from San Francisco State University, and completed my Administrative Credential in Urban School Leadership through CSU Sacramento.

My wife and I raised our two children in Sacramento’s Curtis Park neighborhood. Our children are both college graduates. As both an educator and parent, I understand the importance of creating a school where students are supported academically, socially, and emotionally.
